Becoming a lawyer in France is as much an intellectual marathon as an endurance race. From enrolling at the Institut d’\u00c9tudes Judiciaires to opening one’s own practice, the journey takes nearly ten years and combines academic excellence, practical training and entrepreneurial skills. Here’s an overview of the milestones. <\/p>\n

1. Master 1, ticket to the exam<\/h2>\n

Before you can even think about the robe, you need to earn the first 60 credits of a Master’s degree in law (Master 1) or a recognized equivalent diploma. This is the sine qua non<\/em> for registering for the CRFPA (Centre R\u00e9gional de Formation Professionnelle d’Avocats) entrance exam, nicknamed the “pre-CAPA”. You must register with an IEJ before December 31 of the year preceding the exam. <\/p>\n

2. The CRFPA exam, the wall to cross<\/h2>\n

With a reputation for selectivity, the exam comprises four written tests in September, followed in November by two oral tests, including the dreaded Grand Oral de libert\u00e9s fondamentales. With a pass rate that varies between 30% and 40% depending on the center, many candidates prepare for the exam with the help of a CRFPA preparatory course<\/a> to ensure they have every chance on their side from the very first attempt. <\/p>\n

3. Law school and the CAPA exam<\/h2>\n

Once you’ve been accepted, it’s time for your 18-month CRFPA training course (EFB in Paris, EDA in the regions…). The syllabus is divided into three six-month periods: fundamental practical training, Individual Pedagogical Project (PPI) and final internship in a law firm. The course culminates in the CAPA, the 2026 session of which has been reformed to focus on pleading, an ethics interview and continuous assessment. This is where you learn, day after day, the framework of the legal profession<\/a> and all its ethical obligations. <\/p>\n

4. Taking the oath and being called to the Bar<\/h2>\n

With the CAPA in hand, the young graduate swears an oath before the Court of Appeal – “I swear, as a lawyer, to perform my duties with dignity, conscience, independence, probity and humanity” – and then applies tojoin the Bar<\/a>. This is the stage that legally marks the birth of the lawyer. <\/p>\n

5. Associate, then firm founder<\/h2>\n

The vast majority of young lawyers start out as freelance associates, to learn the profession on the job and build a network. Then it’s time to strike out on their own: choosing a legal status (BNC, SELARL, SELAS…), finding premises, taking out a liability insurance policy, registering with URSSAF, structuring the information system and deploying appropriate management tools. Setting up a law firm is, in fact, a second profession to be tamed – that of legal entrepreneur. <\/p>\n

From Master 1 to the unveiling of the golden plaque, expect to spend an average of eight to ten years.
